@gabriel Yeah but so many people lived through YT censorship, and what I noticed back then was two fold: people will do anything for a dollar, and people would go with the flow if they thought it'll keep their friend circles intact, like the lonely white male version of "staying together for the kids" in a way.

Of course, anyone who has lived through that time knows there's no winning move other than to retreat into a little circle online.
@gabriel I think the bigger problem though IMO, is "will people do shit".

What wasn't mentioned in the thread (because it focused on the RW aspect) was when Tumblr's userbase had their toys taken away, first with the 2018 porn ban and now today with the remaining users being some of the most caustic people online (and literal pedophiles, I'm not even making this part up).

While everyone spilled over to shit up Twitter and the rest of the internet, what isn't talked about is how none of them actually tried to "build your own" site. Even though the right did and got squashed over and over again or had to deal with life on ultra-hard mode (see: the state of KF right now), with Tumblr nobody tried or the alternatives have done worse than shit like Gab has.

No seriously. How is Pillowfort doing? Or Wafrn? Pillowfort is still "pay to sign up" and Wafrn is niche as shit in the fedi/bsky realm.

One of the biggest social media sites for a while literally got wiped off the face of the earth, has an audience where they had it on EASY MODE when it comes to the idea of "building your own site", and still couldn't do it.

@PurpCat @gabriel To be fair, I think Tumblr is a lot more complex than a Twitter clone. Tumblr has custom HTML which can bring security issues if not implemented properly and Tumblr is notorious for not being advertiser friendly. It would probably be even harder for a smaller competitor.

@xianc78 @gabriel Well yeah, but I'm not even talking 1:1 every single dumb skinning feature Tumblr had but rather "the format", by that I mean asks, the dead "macroblog" format, how tags worked, etc.

Copying Tumblr 1:1 is a bad idea considering that IRL nudes are a legal minefield, especially given the population the site had. But if you had say a place for NSFW artists to post it'd attract the same types.

Why do you think Itaku hasn't taken off? I've been trying to shill it to artists who are fed up with censorship but very few of them have bothered crossing over. The site did have some growing pains but now it's fairly stable and robust.
@Hephaestic @xianc78 @gabriel Itaku is probably the most successful of these sites IMO, I've seen many artists using it.

I think the only ones who crossed over were the Pokemon porn artists who got fucked in the FurAffinity Purge a while back and adjacent spheres and that's why you'll notice most of the art is Pokemon related.

What I have seen with artists fed up with censorship is they do not cross over until their own hands are forced. Hence, why the only big fedi NSFW instances are for "that" content.
@PurpCat @xianc78 @gabriel I've seen many western artists moving to Pixiv despite its crappy localization and penis censorship laws. Having an actual pre-established userbase helps, I guess.
@mint @xianc78 @gabriel Not just a userbase but a reputation. Pixiv had a reputation of "cool Japanese artists" and the crap on that site isn't as notorious or mocked as DeviantArt's "finest" was for ages.
