Florine of Burgundy was a princess who at age 14 joined her husband to fight in the first crusade. She fought alongside him until they were ambushed and killed on the battlefield by the Turks in Cappadocia, Anatolia in 1097.

@vitalis Any time a woman of nobility was ambushed I believe rape was involved which is why women would commonly kill themselves throughout history during sieges. Nuns would cut their noses off so they'd be goulish and they'd be not attractive to look at, to dissuade rape.

@vitalis Did you know that a term for rape in shitty olden times was "outraged". I saw a historical account of knights who "outraged" a mothers children in front of her. The wording struck me as odd and it took some digging but I learned that "outrage" used to mean a particularly brutal and violent rape, brutal enough to cause death. I imagine they'd do things like run them through during or after or as part of the rape. Some kings and their knights deserve to die.

violent and brutal rape had been all the rage even in times of classical antiquity. The atrocities that happened during the middle ages is not unique to kings and knights, and while the etymology is interesting I do not find it meaningful to paint any one side as have been more deserving of death except maybe to just dispel the romanticism of the era.

@vitalis Like how media always shows vlad the impailer as just stabbing people on long sticks, when in reality a greased pole was driven up their bottom until it either came out the upper half, managing it out the mouth was seen as a point of honor among the torturers. Horses were used with ropes and they were driven slowly and steadily. When done "properly" the victim would live for days. Vlad practiced on birds and mice with sticks as a child.
