Generalizations are one of 2 ways of communicating the state of the world, while the other one is statistics. So I don't see the issue.

And I don't get what the problem is with generalization, that ("in most cases" is always included, but never said ouloud) single moms that chose a guy, and then decided to leave him did that out of their own choice.
