The problem here is the same as with death penalty. In case, you find, that there was an error during trial, the consequences are impossible to revert.

Other then that... yeah. It's adequate. Not because it should be "cruel". On the opposite, it is precisely directing the source of the "issue". So I think it's a good punishment.
