Polling isn't "propaganda" just because you want to believe it is. Pick up a stats book or something, there's a whole field of knowledge about the ins and outs of polling that you don't seem privy to when you try to dismiss it as "propaganda", and both political parties use it extensively to gauge public opinion.

Not only would it not get me a Nobel Prize, any college-level stats class that introduced the concept would include questions on the test that make sure I understood it doesn't work on datasets where most of the values are of the same order of magnitude, and I would lose points if I didn't understand it.

This is not a groundbreaking insight, this is a basic fact about Benford's Law.

Free lesson for you Dave. It is virtually impossible to honestly partition a set of data and have it NOT follow Benford's Law. Cheating occurs at the boundaries, bias shows up. How? If the biased observer see a batch at a boundary condition -- this is the opportunity to cheat (he thinks, no will notice!). A slip here, a slip there. Thumb on the scale only at the cut-offs. If your base data follows some other magic digit distribution, a similar law will hold. It's so wonderful a law. Humans such natural born liars and cheaters. Especially the Noble Liar Democrats who DON'T BELIEVE IN LAWS OR RULES!!
