In a way it’s like asking why there are so many models of guns. I know a gun is much simpler to operate, but the enthusiasts like to have things built just right in geek circles too.
Individualism. Microsoft.
@LukeAlmighty because some people might not like certain aspects of a distro so they make their own, because it's actually possible to make your own.
