Although they mostly depend on shaping public perception of the public's perception, to make it seem as if those in their camp (now in the minority) are in the majority, and anyone who disagrees is in the fringe. That way, anyone who only occasionally looks at the news never thinks to look outside their bubble.

You're right though, it WILL inevitably backfire though. You can censor social media posts, but you can't censor DM's, texting, and phonecalls. Eventually it reaches it's way to EVERYBODY. When the contrast of the media and the truth is THIS stark, all it takes is one nudge to shatter the illusion.
