Well, there's a couple of reasons.
1) Instances size number : in other words, they consider instances like FSE , KF, SPC and neckbeard as "small flies".
2) Decentralization : Decentralization allows a " Hydra effect", take down one instance and two more will pop up in their place. Even when federating between each other, it would nullify their efforts on shuthing dissidents down ( or more yet, stopping them from organizing ).
3) Friendly Fire: Big Tech can not take once instance alone of fedi because of 2) , if they were to take down even they "right wing" side of Fedi, they would need to take it down ENTIRELY. This creates a problem, since many staffers at Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc are connected to progressives in the masto crowd. This will backfire immediately with the progressive MSM turning on them ( for "denying a safe space to sexual minorities and marginalized people " ). A PR disaster.
4) Lolbertarian LOL : the instances are run people, not corporations. The instances do not pay alliance to any market regulation enforced by Big Tech no do they care. This make any threat hollow and void, since they are unenforceable.

They don't see Fedi as a threat. Remember, when they started going after Gab, their app was quite popular in app stores. Parler, same thing, it started becoming popular. As long as Fedi remains a small platform overall, they won't even look in it's direction.

The concept isn't hard to understand, and I think I've seen another normie getting the idea. The question is whether they would actually end up joining, and whether they'd prefer going to small instances/making their own vs blindly going for the biggest one there is.

That's why I don't want Fedi to "go mainstream". That will just ruin it for all of us.
