quinn: mp3 player :ablobcatnodblink:
so here's a lamp that is too small :blobfox:

i mean i appreciate the attempt i guess :comfymelt:
@alyx yeah it's fine it's just funny how when people don't bother to know you they make really weird choices :ablobcatderpy:

@icedquinn
At this point I legitimately get annoyed/triggered when people go to mp3 as their default file format for whatever they do. There are at least half a dozen other mainstream audio formats that are indescribably better, but people STILL use that shit for everything... and it PISSES ME OFF.

@alyx eh the cheap one i was looking at plays flac and aac too but it's still technically called an mp3 player
@alyx unfortunately to get opus support that's in the 200$ range :ablobcatderpy:
@alyx largely i'm just more chuffed by how bad of a model someone has of who i am based on how much they claim they don't ignore me constantly and then when they do stuff like this it's so out of touch that they're like "what" and it's like yeah that's kind of like if someone says they are a vegetarian for six months you give them a steak like ":blobcatadorable: it's your favorite" and its like :blobfox: i said i *dont* eat steak.

oh well. i did the necessary ego strokes of the social contract. will sort it out later.
@icedquinn @alyx DAP is the term among audiophiles. I guess, they hate mp3 just as much as you guys :comfyjoy:
@newt @alyx when talking to a boomer or gen-x you could get away with calling it a walkman though. :ablobcatgoogly:
@icedquinn @alyx Sony still makes Walkmans, by the way. But they run fucking android for an OS :blobcatfacepalm:

Basically, a phone without the cellular modem and with an overpriced DAC.
@newt @alyx yeah i know. i shopped around. only one in the budget was the little sansa things. would have to transcode to aac.

i keep flacs of what i can but a lot of the library doesn't come in flac. high bit opus to high bit aac is probably not unforgivable though.

either way. i dunno. i'm sure the prevailing opinion is i'm just being unappreciative.
@icedquinn @alyx one idea I had but abandoned was to buy iPod Classic, the one with HDD, and replace the drive with a bunch of microsds. Both stock firmware and rockbox would support this. But the player alone in a nice condition would probably cost around 150 bucks.
@newt @alyx i have an old era ipod and i did run rockbox on it once. i tried to put it back in to service but you need itunes to do anything with them and it would just crash itunes when you plugged it in.

they run about 30$ on ebay now.
@newt @alyx i regret all of the apple shit. the integrated experience is nice but because its all corposhit you're just left in the dust when they get bored.
@alyx @newt it would be nice to have an itunes-like interface for managing external devices. it's particularly nice that you can go in and tell it to only keep unlistened episodes or keep this and that show etc.

when your device is supported the experience is very nice :ablobcatnod: when it's not supported you're fucked. the android experience of a file dump is not all that great. but i guess you get "not great" forever instead of "really good until its useless"

@icedquinn @newt
aac at 320kbps should basically be transparent for anyone, so worst case scenario you'd to opus to 320 aac.
Or you could use neroaacenc, which you can make it do 512kbps constant bitrate IIRC. Though, that's a pretty old encoder, and I'm not sure it still holds up today.

@icedquinn @newt @alyx anything that supports rockbox can play most codecs, I have a sansa clip and a fuze+ and both work quite well with it, the fuze's controls just suck and in my opinion it sounds worse too than the Clip, but it supports sd cards
the Clips aren't manufactured anymore but one might be able to find some used ones, although they are usually overpriced
@tai @alyx @newt the hifi ones are nice aside from the poor (relative) battery consumption :blobcateyes:

but yeah it's like. eh.
@tai @alyx @newt as a person who will never get to go anywhere i will live just fine without one. it just would have been nice to have something more than, well, nothing for quinnsmas :comfymelt:
@icedquinn @alyx @newt yeah these are good enough for me, all I need on the go is an approximation of music blasting into my ears while exercising
@icedquinn @alyx depends on the store. I got mine at an audiophile store because they are the only ones selling these things here :comfyeyes:
