yeah its a joke video about how its not a scam but making the starter ships look like shit is a little exploitative :blobcatglare2:

Isn't it a common trope for RPGs to start you with a rusty sword or something? Doesn't sound all that unusual.

@alyx i sure love paying full price for ship replacement insurance and its an identically old model that looks like absolute shit.

if only i had paid 200$ fourth boundary monies my ship would have come with clean panels (none of the expensive ships have any dirt on them)
@alyx actually i don't mind the idea of interiors getting dirty and having to get them power washed or something i just think it's really exploitative to use the fact it's a video game so you can't rent a power washer for an hour to try and manipulate people in to desiring lower end ships less by making them permanently dirty
@alyx sort of the same gimmick as making people look like hobos but offering normal clothing as cash shop exclusives

@icedquinn
I don't disagree that Star Citizen is manipulative, but considering no one attacks Skyrim for not starting you off with an ebony sword, while payed mods that offer you good gear exist, I just don't feel it would be honest for me to criticize Star Citizen for this.

@alyx skyrim wasn't designed around selling you sword DLC. there was a whole and complete game long before creators club

@icedquinn
Sorry man, I'm just not convinced. There are countless RPGs that give you bad items at the start that have paid content day one, and people don't do shit about it. And ultimately you can't do shit. A game needs to have a sense of progression. For that you're gonna need to start with the shit items.
If the start ship wasn't dirty, you'd still complain that it was the worst ship in the game and that it manipulates people into paying real money for a better one. Even if the starter ship was mid tier, people would still complain the game promotes spending real money cause even better ships are available from the jpeg store.
Basically imo you're asking them to break the game by removing progression because they decided to have paid stuff available.

@alyx > charging 600$ for clean wall textures is just business bro

well that's peak dumbass take my work this thread is done :youmusip:

@icedquinn
If people are that stupid to buy it, that's their problem. But the issue here imo is the prices they charge, not the fact that they give new players an undesirable ship.
The former is the scam that is present in every part of this game, the latter is normal RPG practice.

@alyx @icedquinn Both are intended to start you with something inferior and make you want something better, the issue is how you acquire the better thing and why they're doing it. One does it through gameplay as part of gameplay progression, they other does it through out of game transactions to make you spend more money.

@Alex @icedquinn
As far as I know, you can get good ships through gameplay too. You can claim that it's too hard to get, but that's again not something unique to Star Citizen.
Something that might be unique, is that there are too many ships that are exclusive to outside game transactions. And if all or an overwhelming majority of the best ships are only available by spending $, that is something I can indeed criticize, but I don't know if that's the case.
