Solar panels have their place. They're great for someone living a modest life, on a self sufficient farm, off the grid, things like that.

You just can't expect to depend on them to power a big, industrial focused country. They work better as an useful addition, to an alternative consistent power source, to lower electricity costs during the day.

Yeah... we really need to start up nuclear again. I've heard we're starting to run out of some specific rare elements that can only be produced in nuclear reactors.

@alyx @thor meanwhile biomass is “green”, apparently

even though it causes deforestation and a crapton of co2 emission

Remember when we went away from using paper because we needed to stop chopping down trees?.... And now we're going back to using paper because plastic pollutes...

It's become such a mess...

If you can grow biomass as fast as you use it, you technically reabsorb the CO2 from burning it. So you'd get the net zero. But that ignores the energy costs of processing, transporting, etc.

@alyx @thor yeah it’s pretty stupid, granted paper can be recycled but so can plastic. plastic is also a lot firmer, especially straws. i even know some environmentally conscious people who find the plastic straws extremely impractical

there’s also the fact that, while plastic ending up in the sea is tragic, this is mostly the fault of large corporations rather than the average consumer. yet those same corpos all fingerpoint at us. it’s a blackpill

@lottev @thor
Oooooh... ok. I was kinda scratching my head to understand that part.

Yeah, I have some personal plastic straw reserves. The hilarious bit, is that supposedly some big fast food franchises did invest money into machines to recycle the plastic straws.
