In past, relationships were arranged and made in order to obtain land and power mostly like both examples you provided. Not by attraction and usually managed by parents, very usually women were the kids.
At that time, women were intended as a person to have and raise kids, prepare food and stay in home. Reason why it exists at some middle-east countries.
