How the fuck was this guy able to make a full-length video game from scratch while also dealing with college, a full-time job, and raising a family, all without going through a mental breakdown?

@xianc78 He probably pays a 10th of his salary to some dev studio in Vietnam.

@ryo Do you know who this guy is? He's the creator of CaveStory. He made it all by himself starting in his late college years and finished it in five years while having a family and a full-time job in the process.

And he did it all from scratch. He wrote the entire game in C++ and DirectX.

@xianc78 Oh, I see.
Never heard of it to be honest.

@ryo It was the first major indie game. It was released back in 2004 as freeware. It's an action-platformer with adventure elements. Not the official site but has all the info here.

His story is summed up in this video.

@xianc78 @ryo

ACCHUALLY indies is any non-console game pre 1995. I mean. Have you seen commander Keen? First game as 1990. Also ID's very first game.
@beardalaxy @xianc78 @ryo

Fair enough then. Hard to think of a solo dev pre 2004 that did something on par to Cave Story.

@nerdman @beardalaxy @ryo RollerCoaster Tycoon is probably the only thing closest to it (made by one guy and entirely in assembly), but he relied on others for art and the game was published by a third-party.

@nerdman @beardalaxy @xianc78 ZUN made Touhou Project, first release in 1996 for DOS.
Even to this day he made all his games entirely by himself, the only exceptions being the fighting games, which were made in collaboration with Team Fortress.
