Still don't understand why I see people defending this shit. The argument was that companies ABSOLUTELY NEEDED that extra ten dollars and that the reason they were doing microtransactions is because 60 a pop wasn't enough. Well now we have 70 dollar games, and they're still unfinished pieces of shit with microtransactions and no one is admitting they were wrong because they're fucking retard consoomers.

@weebSharpie @rainignterror1080p yeah. It slowly creeps up on people. First it was 60, hardly anyone remembers that standard price for ps2 and Xbox games were 50. Then after that it was micro dlc, then season passes, then lootboxes, then gacha in a full price game, and then ads in a game. They wait for the outrage to die down and then add the next gross thing.

@Kyonko802 @weebSharpie @rainignterror1080p back then and even more so in the 90s, you were lucky if you got more than one game on your birthday and one game for christmas. and you had to hope they were AAA games because you'd always have parents and grandparents buying shitty movie tie-in games that were only like $20 in the bargain bin or whatever.

that's why sharing games was such a huge thing back then. used to strategize with friends and family members on who would get what game so we could play them and then swap them around so everyone could play everything.

it's also why renting games was so huge, because instead of buying a game for a lot of money you could just rent one for $5 for the week, play the fuck out of it, and then return it. we're seeing a sort of resurgence with that with things like Game Pass which is honestly a really nice system. essentially "renting" the games you really want to play but don't want to pay an exorbitant amount for, and the games you do want to keep forever you can buy outright.

I know you think Steam will be there forever, but eventually, it won’t. It might be 20 years from now, it might be 50, it might be 5 .. but one day those servers will go away, and some of your games won’t even start without dropping in a replacement steam.dll.

@djsumdog @weebSharpie @Kyonko802 @rainignterror1080p valve has said that if they ever do go under, they'll let you download all your games and play them without needing to connect to steam. up to you whether you trust that or not i guess, but thankfully there is a whole litany of people out there that can and do crack stuff anyway.

steam going under doesn't seem like it will happen in the near future, though. it will at one point, obviously, as everything will, but it's not like playstation or nintendo running old and relatively unsecure servers for old platforms that you can't buy brand new anymore.

I’ve become a stickler for physical media again precisely because I don’t trust promises of not revoking access and de-DRMing stuff upon company folding, etc. Send me a physical disk or cartridge that I can use at my leisure or bust.
