Implying they ever actually believed in it in the first place. We have a lot of fake "believers" in Christianity too that are turning the various sects gay. I think a lot of people join simply for the feeling of community that no longer exists in actual society, but these people are NPCs and desire only to uphold the system's tenets, so when they hear something uncomfortable, they break out the mental gymnastics to justify how what ZOG believes is actually the correct view according to scripture and that the other view is outdated because reasons.
