@af2 my pronouns are set to dude/duder so it's only a matter of time before someone tries to buttfuck my account lol.
it's hard to get away from discord though because it involves convincing like 15-20 people to move to something else JUST to talk with me and i already had a hard enough time doing that when i left facebook. hard enough that i had to make another (more anonymous) facebook account to reconnect with people.
@Zerglingman @af2 these are people i need to maintain some level of contact with in order to pay them, people i'm playing d&d with, etc.
it's also pretty unavoidable if you like more niche/specific game modding because there are so many projects that are more or less hosted on there.
keeping a low profile is the best option.
@Zerglingman @af2 too little too late in this case lol
@Zerglingman @af2 also, not like anyone on here responded to the several attempts i made to start a d&d campaign just sayin.
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @Zerglingman @af2 well i'm already running one online campaign so i'm not going to start another one now, but i use my own campaign setting based on my video game.
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @Zerglingman @af2 appreciate it, but yeah like i said i've currently got a campaign goin with my max player limit and i'm not looking to start a new one right now.
i'll bookmark this for the future though.
@af2 leaving discord, i know the only person that follows me is my brother and nobody else. so yeah, definitely a good way to not have contact with anyone ever again, very cool.
you have to make some compromises to be social sometimes. the vast majority of people will not go through extra hoops to keep in contact with someone if they have other people that are more readily available, all of us included. i would rather have a low profile on discord and pretty much only talk to people in DMs than make many friendships even more inconvenient than they already are.
it's like why people will stay in a city or state they hate because they have family there. it's a compromise that's worth it and it's not like you're going to convince the entire rest of your family to move somewhere else with you that has more agreeable laws or something.
and yes, i do literally need to be on both discord and facebook for the time being because i'm not a dick hole who isn't going to pay people for their work.
@af2 well be grateful you have friends like that.
@beardalaxy @af2 I really hate the lame ass excuses they make when you suggest an alternative. "It's just more convient to use the program that I always use", "but Discord has emotes, images, and voice", "isn't <insert alternative here> what terrorists/pedophiles/drug-dealers use".
@xianc78 @af2 i think the main problem is that they aren't going to move off the platform entirely with me, so they have to juggle both instead and when you only have one dude who is on platform B you're bound to either check it less or never check it at all.
fuck, my IRL friends don't even check their PHONES half the time lol. i'm not gonna' get them to install something like element and always keep it running.
@beardalaxy @af2 XMPP stores logs up to a certain amount of time, but people rarely use it for group chats (at least from my experience). You just need to set up a server (an actual server and not what Discord calls a "server") and you can host as many accounts and chat rooms as you want. It's also like the fedi, so servers can communicate with each other. There are also plug-ins to add voice, E2EE, etc.
Only problem is that most clients resemble AIM, Windows Messenger, etc. Of course, you are going to get the "it's outdated response" even though it's just as functional. Though, it is theoretically possible to create an XMPP client that resembles Discord.
>fuck, my IRL friends don't even check their PHONES half the time
I don't blame them. Nobody should have to carry their government tracking device 24/7.
