@Mr_NutterButter from my experience, taking a couple different ones, they cut out the lows but they also cut out the highs. Everything seemed more dull. My normal range of emotions was squashed. That's why one of the side effects of anti depressants are, ironically, suicidal thoughts.

Obviously my emotions vary more than the normal human, but I still think there's a reason why we have the feelings we do and it's better in most cases to train for a different mindset/outlook and to identify what is keeping you low so you can work to remove it. It's not just a thing you can visit a therapist and be done with either, it may even be a constant struggle throughout your life, but that's part of your human condition and I think it's good to learn to be at peace with that.

Sometimes there is a legitimate lack of serotonin or whatever in someone's brain and in those cases I think some meds might be necessary, but it's also extremely important to have a good support system while you're on them and perhaps even moreso when you're coming off them. In addition to everything else I mentioned, of course.
