the US military seems like a place people go when they don't know what else to do with their life and that's always made me sad

@beardalaxy If they deploy and they don't get shot, which is most noncombat MOS's, they'll walk away pretty set up. Kick myself for not volunteering for a deployment. I would have been able to buy a house a lot sooner.

@NotImportant maybe a few years ago it wouldn't have been so bad, but right now you're walking a tightrope

@givenup @beardalaxy I also grow potatoes and I own a 5% stake in the ground they're growing in

@beardalaxy Most are forced by their parents. Even though they legally can't force their children in the military, there is a loophole if the child is struggling to find a job the parents can make an ultimatum "either you visit the nearest recruiting center or you are out of the house". That would've been me if I didn't go to college.
