@littljack I can't speak for @matrix but I can give you a bit of context. This is all as I understand it, so maybe I'm wrong somewhere but hopefully he can clarify that if so.

This instance uses an old fork of mastodon called mastodo, which added some new stuff to mastodon. It is deprecated now, and the author recommends to use pleroma, but changing over from mastodon to pleroma is a massive headache.

Matrix does bring over security patches from mastodon's main branch, but AFAIK it all has to be done manually. Whatever incompatibility you are experiencing would have to be patched manually as well, not just updating mastodon like one normally would.

I think the instance really is starting to show its age lol, there are features like editing and quote posts that we don't have and the latter is super spotty. Sometimes it will show a link to the original post so you can look at it on the instance for context but other times it's just the quote post itself so you have to open it on their instance to see that it was even a quote post at all lol. BUT matrix does run all of this in his free time and it is free for all of us so I can't complain too much!
