@verita84 Season 1 looked sensational, Season 2 was a big downgrade, but hardly all that bad in the grand scheme of things. Season 3 is an atrocity.

@ChristiJunior @verita84 The first season was animated by Madhouse, while the second and third seasons were produced by J.C.Staff.

Madhouse's resume is legendary (pic related).

While the best anime J.C.Staff ever made was Excel Saga, which isn't known for its animation quality, and was almost certainly a fluke in every way.
> The lyrics for the opening theme Love (Loyalty) (「愛(忠誠心)」, Ai (Chūseishin)) were written "on the train, five minutes before the deadline" - director Shinichi Watanabe.

@ChristiJunior @verita84 I only watched season 1 so I can't say for certain.
I watched a clip, and it looks like a lot of CG, experimenting I hope?

I really don't understand how every studio known to man manages to screw up the frame rate of 3D animation.

This shit was already figured out decades ago.
ReBoot first aired circa 1994.

Homos will defend this shit saying it's hard to make it look smooth when combined with traditional animation, but Planetes (2003) had 3D models for Earth and a space station, and it slowly, and SMOOTHLY rotated.

These days, even full 3D shows have stutters, from the small screen such as Kemono Friends, to the big screen like Batman Ninja.

@coded_artist @verita84 Honestly, the Dark Young CGI didn't actually offend me nearly as much as a spell that instantly killed 70,000 people being illustrated by like a few dozen copy/paste soldiers dropping dead.

@ChristiJunior @verita84 They definitely could have added some flair to that, but I don't know how that looked in the manga.
Could be the director's fault. :peepoShrug:

@ChristiJunior @verita84 Should've looked more like the art people are making of it.
This looks more like a top tier spell.

@coded_artist @verita84 Overlord is actually a light novel, so they were free to go nuts with it:

>A black wind blew, racing past the Kingdom’s army, which had just finished changing its formation.

>No, there was no physical wind blowing. Neither the scattered weeds growing on the plains or the hairs on the heads of the Kingdom’s soldiers had been touched.

>There were 70,000 men in the left wing of the Kingdom’s army.

>Every single one of them was slain in an instant.

Meanwhile, here's the anime:

Nimble really was tasked with some heavy lifting in that scene, because I counted maybe 70 corpses, not the 70,000 he claimed to have seen.
@coded_artist @ChristiJunior @verita84 i cant put my finger on why 3d cg looks so off in anime
Is it because it is rendered at a higher framerate than the 2d stuff making it look too fluid?
@Vidmastereon @coded_artist @ChristiJunior @verita84 no, it looks shit because they never bother to try to make it look good they employ it to cut corners.

and when they do that, the animation of the 3D dudes is choppy like someone insane decided to "animate" using powerpoint.

I could be off-base, but to me, when something is given the effect of appearing to be three dimensional, it looks far far worse when it isn't fluid.

Anime I've watched from the 2000's that would use 3DCG as a gimmick, or even to save money, still usually had them move fluidly. And if they didn't, they did not stay on screen for too long because it looks bad.

It's fucking bizarre. It's not just Overlord that did this, there are a bunch of anime in the last 10 years that do this and no I do not buy the excuse that it is "cinematic" and meant to align with the older traditional 2D when they did not fucking use to do that before.
@lichelordgodfrey @Vidmastereon @coded_artist @ChristiJunior @verita84
Japan can do well-made 3DCG animation. I've actually witnessed it first hand. Japan doesn't have to live with this shame. Pic very much related
@lichelordgodfrey
By the way, this is a movie that would be great for The List™
@SuperSnekFriend what is the title?

oh and there's a glimmer of hope in january btw.

I just learned there's a schedule I may be able to switch to that goes Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday and leaves Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday off (unless overtime is called).

I am not allowed to switch right now because we're in the busy holiday season. nobody's allowed to switch.

Nice! :jahy_oooh:

Name of the Lupin movie is Lupin III: The First (2019)
This was a fun movie. I like that they tied in the exploits of Arsene Lupin I into the plot.

@SuperSnekFriend @lichelordgodfrey @ChristiJunior @Vidmastereon @verita84 To be fair, the Resident Evil and Final Fantasy movies weren't bad either, animation-wise.

I really don't get what the issue is with the shit framerate on modern CG.

@lichelordgodfrey @ChristiJunior @Vidmastereon @coded_artist @verita84 2D and 3D animation aren't the same, but they do share certain fundamentals that the old men of Japan are presently cutting off at the knees.

@Vidmastereon @ChristiJunior @verita84 The technology has been out there for a long time to make 3D anime look good, really good even.

Also, my examples include fully 3D shows, and very old ones as well, so all the exuses of TV frame rate, and what not, are just that, excuses.

Here is said tech:

@ChristiJunior @coded_artist @verita84 Outsourcing, pretty much everytime this happens it's because a japanese corp has fallen in love with outsourcing to pajeets
@ChristiJunior @coded_artist @verita84 Oh also this basically happens every single time as well. And it looks like it's happening this time as well based on the CEO blithering on about how they poured in endless effort and funds into this.
@ChristiJunior @coded_artist @verita84 Madhouse is not immune to making entire seasons of mid-low quality anime. Even within their resume, as far as anything made in the last like...15+ years goes, One Punch Man S1 is practically an anomaly. And a lot of that comes down to a handful of very talented animators and a passionate director who networked with some of the best animators from outside of the studio to produce that one season.
