Ray tracing itself is not a bad technology, but right now it's half-baked at best. And the processing power just isn't there yet. Especially when combined with the current 4k/120hz trend.
If applied fully, ray tracing does provide a noticeable graphic enhancement. But the current hardware isn't powerful enough for most games to do that, so they generally implement only part of what it can do, like reflections or shadows. And in these cases, the difference isn't that big between ray tracing and older methods of doing things.
