>"Superman is a Marry Sue"
Sure, I can see why you think that

>"Batman is a Marry Sue"
Are you fucking retarded?!?

@matrix "Mary Sue" is a dumb concept because people like Mary sues.

What people hate is bad writing. And usually Mary Sue types bring that along with them.

"Perfect" characters are also bad because people like the underdog. Mary Sue perfect characters are better off being villains because people can forgive that.

@zemichi I would say that Mary Sues are the consequence of bad writing. Some people like them, but that's irrelevant. You could argue that it's a dumb concept as a character, because they usually don't exist in a vacuum. When a Mary Sue is present, other characters are bad too.

@matrix @zemichi Mary Sues are the bane of literature and especially theatrical writing. They're only of interest to the author most of the time.

I guess it all is just depending on your definition. In my opinion, it is just about the universality of their abilities, and incompatibility of them with the backstory.

Why so complex definition? Because there are some characters, that at least for me embody the concept, even if well written.

The Doctor: This mary sue is something truly special. Nit only does he have every important information in the universe, but when that is not enough, the universe itself will break just so he can win... (I am not making this up. This was in the last two episodes before I just gave up)

So no, Superman is not a mary sue IMO, because he has many equals, and won't win everything... Contrary to the Doctor at least.
