So there's a fiber provider where I live and it would be nice to have gigabit fiber however their reviews are usually that the service is flawless or that it's unusable. It would essentially be a roll of the dice.

I wonder how much are they overselling that gigabit connection.

The backbone that has a access point here provides 10Gbit so I wouldn't be surprised if they are overselling it quite a lot.

@matrix I received a flyer in mailbox about fibre internets being provided to my address some time ago - with the offer being capped to the point where I get the same deal with my cable ISP. For the lulz, I called and inquired - turned out they are not providing internet access to here at all and someone just fucked up.

@takao
I just saw a dude with their van putting a wire into the ground at the intersection which is like 20 meters away so I guess it's possible to get it to our house.

@matrix This is why I didn't switch providers when my contract came up for renewal. Better the devil, and all that. Very disappointing that in the current year ISP's are still either acceptable or completely useless.

@SADIDAS
Yeah, I have 100Mbps VDSL which is fine and stable. It's just that the upload sucks.

@matrix I don't think I've ever seen an ISP which had an upload speed that was more than a quarter of the download speed.

@matrix
I got a similar situation where I am. I have a choice between my current very reliable provider, or the new guy that on paper provides much better upload speeds (same download), for the same money, but they're known for having horrible customer service. I denied this other ISP 2 times now. I preferred the reliability, since I don't really need the upload boost.
If you do need the speed boost, then maybe it could be a risk worth taking for you, but for me, it hasn't been worth it so far.
