A classic example of English pronunciation inconsistency is the "ough" spelling, which can be pronounced in multiple ways depending on the word:

"cough" → /kɒf/ (like "off")

@teto Most of these used to have a consistent pronunciation and then the sound used basically dissappeared (possibly due to post black death social changes).
Yeah, english has retarded pronunciations for some words but they feel less random than Japanese imo
