@matrix I wish english would use 20 writing systems that change based on 100 different arbitrary factors. But then some autists would still learn it to read "warhammer" books in their original version

A classic example of English pronunciation inconsistency is the "ough" spelling, which can be pronounced in multiple ways depending on the word:

"though" → /ðoʊ/ (like "go")
"through" → /θruː/ (like "true")
"tough" → /tʌf/ (like "cuff")
"cough" → /kɒf/ (like "off")
"drought" → /drɔːt/ (like "bought")
"hiccough" → /ˈhɪkəp/ (like "hiccup")

@teto Most of these used to have a consistent pronunciation and then the sound used basically dissappeared (possibly due to post black death social changes).
Yeah, english has retarded pronunciations for some words but they feel less random than Japanese imo
