@coolboymew And that's despite Neil Cuckmann tweeting out the poll and telling people to vote for TLOU2 to own the bigots.

@ChristiJunior @coolboymew Didn't Toby Fox try to use the same tactic with Undertale?

@coolboymew @ChristiJunior I knew he didn't call people bigots but I remember him encouraging bot flooding for some GameFAQs poll which is even worse.

@xianc78 @coolboymew I thought it was just Reddit that won Undertale that contest, but I wouldn't be shocked if bots were also involved - Draven's very similar contest-winning run on the same site also saw him defeating Link in a super-shady way that was almost Biden-tier, and the site admins were not interested in investigating the result because they were sick of Link and the Zelda series dominating those contests.

@ChristiJunior @coolboymew Tumblr was involved as well. Remember, many of Undertale's fanbase comes from Toby's work on Homestuck which was popular among Tumblrites and the GameFAQs administration did confirm there were a bunch of bot votes for Undertale which is the only reason it was even nominated.

I do have a good feeling that Toby was involved though. Undertale really only got popular through his friends and followers on Starmen.net and Homestuck and they probably only shilled it because they will do anything for him. And I remember hearing that he was encouraging the poll flood (probably just to get more sales). Just shows how much of a talentless hack he is.

Huh? Is Undertale a bad game? I played it briefly and it seemed nice, considering it was made by a single person.
@ChristiJunior @coolboymew

@okabe_rintarou @ChristiJunior @coolboymew It's pretty mediocre. The only thing it has going for it is it's minigame based combat which is mostly just dodging bullets, so it's mostly just a bullet-hell with walking in between and a story that only appeals to the Tumblr crowd.

And being made by a single person isn't something special as it was made in GameMaker which is simple enough for even kids to use. If you want something impressive, CaveStory was made by one guy using nothing but C++ and DirectX. He even wrote his own music software and his own MIDI-like format. Even to this day, I still can't think of anyone that has topped that.

@xianc78
I don't know. Undertale seemed innocuous and charming to me so far. And I know about Caves tory, I just don't think everyone has to be as hardcore like that when creating a game. TempleOS was created by just one person too, if you know what I mean.

@ArdanianRight @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou Toby Fox is a music composer and nothing more. You can clearly see his lack of skills when it comes to gameplay and level design. Most fans agree that level design is one of his weaknesses and the whole pacifist RPG idea isn't really original either. A lot of JRPGs had pacifist mechanics since at least Phantasy Star I.

The only game he made previously was some generic Earthbound ROM hack back in high school which makes me wonder why Nintendo has his game on their systems and has Sans as a Mii Costume in Smash when he made a huge no-no (creating a ROM hack of one of their games) in the past.

@xianc78 @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou I only ever really watched someone else play the game doing a genocide run, which was useful for understanding Sans memes. But it feels like there's a lot of games now that just catch on as the hot new thing without being super special.
@xianc78 @ArdanianRight @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou I've never heard of being allowed to not kill things before Undertale. Was Fantasy Star any good?

@PorkCow @ArdanianRight @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou It's spelled "Phantasy Star" the first game allowed you to talk out of fights for certain enemies. There wasn't any penalty for doing or not doing it, but a lot of games built off of that mechanic since then.

@xianc78 @ArdanianRight @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou Neat. So why is it taking so long to normalize it as a gaming trope? It seems like something that would have been kinda fun in any given Paper Mario game.

@PorkCow @ArdanianRight @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou Probably because Phantasy Star is a Sega IP and Sega isn't really known for JRPGs and it wasn't really used in that game. It only gave you hints and it was only in the first game, but there have been games that were inspired by this mechanic like Moon: Remix RPG Adventure which was an inspiration for Undertale according to Toby Fox.

And while not exactly the same genre you got Western RPGs like Deus Ex and Fallout where you could try a pacifist route except for maybe bosses. Granted, Western RPGs put more of an emphasis on player choice than Japanese RPGs, but still shows that the pacifist mechanics of Undertale aren't unique.

@sundowner @NEETzsche @ArdanianRight @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou @xianc78 Speaking of Brightly colored combat twinks, I accidentally saw the trailer for the first time with some idiot's potato head screaming in the corner and thought it was a Marx reveal when Wingbert the Smashball split in half. The Sepheroth music would have been a dead givaway.
@ArdanianRight @xianc78 @ChristiJunior @coolboymew @okabe_rintarou The concept of being able to find a character's personality quirk and exploit it instead of killing them is much more appealing to me than a generic shooty game that doesn't let you collect things that don't immediately break.
