Remember, if you own a small video game studio, STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM NINTENDO!!! They will run you into the ground! Even if you get a chance to make a game with their IPs, it's just not worth it. They will then screw your IPs.

@xianc78 i don't intend on ever selling out. it would have to be a purchase of an IP that i would get a ridiculous amount of money from, enough to purchase a home and live without doing a single thing for the next like decade.

i'd never sell an actual company, though. especially if i was still working at it. probably will never go public either. i hate the idea that someone else will have control over my creative works, even if it will technically give me better profit margins temporarily or whatever the fuck.

Honestly, I just plan on open-sourcing my IPs or releasing them into the public domain. Basically I will let anyone use my characters, settings, etc for free, without permission, and for any purpose (both commercial and non-commercial) just like how anyone can make movies based off of fairy tales. I think it would be interesting to see a modern IP that anyone can use and see all the different interpretations of it.

It's not even about who owns your company. Nintendo is known for screwing third-parties in the past, such as trying to get DMA to convert Body Harvest (an open world vehicular combat game for the N64) into a RPG just to compete with the PS1 RPG lineup. That game ended up being temporarily canceled, only for Midway to pick up where they left off, and DMA when bankrupt as a result of that. Granted, this was when Nintendo lost a lot of third-parties and the only third-parties developing on the Nintendo 64 were smaller AA devs, but still.

@xianc78 yeah that's not a bad idea. honestly i'd probably take on a bit more of a ZUN persona and just let people do whatever the fuck they wanted with my world/characters. that way, people can still make good stuff with it but i'd still be seen as the "official source."

touhou isn't exactly public domain, but i think that's as close as you'd get to what you're thinking of.

@beardalaxy I don't know much about Touhou, but from what I've heard, the Doujin game scene is known for people using assets from other projects.

I don't just want people to be able to make fan games. I'm also 100% okay with people profiting off of my IPs. The only real concern is people making "woke" interpretations of my characters or using them for other propaganda purposes, but as long as it doesn't look like that I personally endorse those views, I have no problem.

Open-source games might be the closest thing to this right now, but not really. Sometimes, only the code is open (usually because it's a commercial property). Other times, you can only use the non-code assets and IPs for forks of the game. In most other cases, the lore of the game isn't even fleshed out. A lot of open-source games are clones of games that don't even have story like Minecraft or SimCity. If you check, most open source first-person shooters are just Quake III-like arena shooters.

@xianc78 yeah, ZUN's cool with people profiting off of touhou stuff too! games, music, etc. he just keeps making his own games and is successful doing it. that's part of why the game has gained so much popularity, because anyone is able to make stuff with it which might draw in more people.

@beardalaxy I wonder if it is an easy way to see your characters in big games like Smash but I think the AAA companies wouldn't do it even if they legally could because it is considered "unprofessional" for whatever reason.

Of course they don't want to misrepresent them, so they will contact the original creators anyway. Sakurai does this even with Nintendo characters. Though, I know a lot of Mega Man fans hate his representation in Smash because he's silent while in his games he is more than capable of talking.

Either they think it's just too unprofessional just to randomly use a free-to-use IP from an indie/amateur, or they just don't want to "over-weeb" the character roster (they need to balance it out for western audiences).

If mega man fans are really upset about that it's really funny lol. Rockman doesn't talk in the games as far as I know. They're all very simple 2d games with no voices at all. Zero from MMX does talk though (for better or for worse: "WHAT AM I FIGHTING FORRRRR"). Rockman might have text in some of the games but he still doesn't have an actual voice I don't think. Maybe I'm wrong though.

@beardalaxy From what I can tell, all incarnations of Mega Man have lines, though classic is a little bit more quiet, but that's only because his games are less story driven than the other series.

@xianc78 looks like he didn't start having any dialogue lines until mega man 6. I've only played the first few and mega man x so that checks out. He's got a voice in marvel v Capcom too apparently.

Maybe they just wanted to go old school with it :peepoShrug:

@beardalaxy I don't think the NES games had any dialogue at all, but the manuals and supplement material does show him talking.
