Which is better?

@xianc78 they're both good if done right, but you can make so much more high quality stuff with different characters in the same world since they'll react to the world differently. the first one can be done really well too if it is the same characters in a different setting.

@beardalaxy I tend to agree. That's why I feel like the Zelda series is kind of stale in their plots, even though they are different incarnations, they are basically still the same characters. It would be more interesting if we had different protagonists and antagonists in Hyrule, each with their own motivations.

The Ys series is basically like what you suggested. It revolves around Adol who travels the world looking for adventures, but even that can get pretty stale. I've noticed how formulaic that series is. Adol usually starts off his adventure getting shipwrecked, but this is to justify him starting at square one in terms of equipment. I guess that's why most RPG and adventure game series tend to have different characters per installment.

@beardalaxy @xianc78 I like how she did it for Kumo Desu. 50% is view from MC, 50% is everyone else. The whole story is a stream of consciousness, and the same events will be shown from the POV of different characters, meaning everything is told through different lenses

@xianc78 best series I've seen so far was The Wire which I think is somewhere in between of those two choices. It's a world, but also characters, and you do follow the same characters over time.

@xianc78 I tend to prefer option B, just because I feel it lends the series less rigidity and more towards experimentation with subsequent entries, keeps things fresh, if only on a surface level. Also it gives each character the ability to have an arc with a definitive "end," even if they end up being a supporting character in a subsequent entry their role in that story could be completely different (plus you don't run into the problem of "character fatigue," as easily).
