If I think of shortcuts using tech for art not as cheating, but as delegation, my anxiety about it goes way down. It's still my idea, it's still my vision, I'm just telling the tech what to do, like an assistant, and it does it, it's still mine, and it's more efficient. The problem comes when I don't know how to use the tech fully.

@Jazzy_Butts it's like sampling, why not. or rather, using the appropiate tool for the job. right knife, right carving tool

@tarperfume Yes, in my head also, I imagine myself as a director, or a planner, creating a play or event, I put things where they need to go, I may not have blown up every single balloon, or harvested the rubber and made the latex, but it's still my event, my plan, my show.

@Jazzy_Butts tweaking colours and lining or setting parameters to produce a specific product, working on top of the outcome as a basis for a new outcome, that's tech art i can appreciate. if it's simply putting in a prompt and little else there was no delegation, that's more of a suggestion

@doorroo ai is not art it is trash, it is spectrographic repugnance

@Jazzy_Butts I don't know if it's medalj) necessarily more efficient. It may be for you if you can't draw, but an artist will be able to whip up the exact thing you want while using a lot less actual power to do it. Think about AI websites where their servers' GPUs are operating at 100% constantly, and you have to sometimes try a dozen times to get the prompt right and then you're upwards of 30 minutes in the hole. And if you want to run it yourself, the GPU (plus all the other computer parts) to do it is going to cost some money as well.

If I want an approximation of something, I don't mind using AI real quick, but if I want something specific and to look good, I think it is more efficient to pay an artist. I mean, the artist i just commissioned for some Damaris artwork, I paid a good price for and in exchange I got to give her insanely specific instructions and then on top of that, when there were some things that looked slightly off she could correct them easily. Trying to get the same result with AI would be impossible, or at the very least incredibly inefficient.

@beardalaxy why tf does everyone think I'm talking about ai? I'm talking about digital drawing. In digital drawing I can use the fill tool, in real life, I have to manually color that in, maybe with some masking fluid if I want to be careful, but that's it. Digital is...enraging, because people get the same adulation for half the work. The time it takes practicing may be the same for a digital and traditional artist, but one will have to spend a week producing a completed piece the other can finish in a fraction of the time. It's not fair, and this unfairness pisses me off, because people hold up digital next to traditional and say "art is art", that's like comparing a sculpture to architecture and saying "art is art" like some kind of idiot.

@beardalaxy So basically any time I make anything good that's digital I feel like a fraud

@Jazzy_Butts they're just different mediums/different schools and will give different results. There is a reason I commissioned actual paintings for my game in one area and digital art in another.

@Jazzy_Butts and that painter actually got me the 15 pieces I commissioned really quickly, so perhaps the amount of time it takes isn't that huge.

@beardalaxy yes it's just hard for me to wrap my head around, that's why I have to think of it like delegation, the computer is like a team of minions, and I can just say "MINIONNMS, COLOR IN THAT SQUARE!" and they're like "YES BOSS" and it's like, I COULD have colored in that square myself, and maybe that would have been more authentic, but they would still look the same.

@Jazzy_Butts eh, depends on the style you are going for. Filling with a color wouldn't be good for digital art that looks more painterly, or that has more texture to it. Like I said, there are just a lot of different styles that use different techniques and so whatever you can do to achieve the look you want, it's fair game.
