Adults would sometimes disappear, along with peers, and you'd be alone in a seemingly abandoned school building or church hallway, and you'd get this odd feeling, like something was watching you, but you'd brush it off, Mom would pick you up, and you'd chat about stuff, no phones to look at on the way, no encyclopedias on hand to look things up in the car to verify information, just chatting. Dialup made a sound that told you you were about to have a stroke, and people put up with it for YEARS.
