This is a really good video essay on mgsv and it helped me understand it, and believe me I've tried, but this made something click. Big Boss metaphorically turned into what he was trying to defeat, him smearing ashes on his face is literally his metaphorical transformation into Skull Face, he became the same as the enemy he sought to be better than.
