It is, but that is not the problem.

The prisons themselves are a faulty concept. They do nothing to either fix the damage caused by the crime, nor to prevent repetition of the crime.

You spend your tax money to put people into a hellhole, where they learn to supress their civilized nature and study crime from each other. By the time they came out, they cannot find a job, AND know more about how to be a good criminal then before.

What part of this system seems to be working correctly?

It is. Assaults are part of the prison life, no matter what gender you are. as well as any other part of prison life I described above.

That is why I think that the entire debate is pointless, until the bigger issue is solved.

True transexuals are quite rare. What is far less rare in a prison context is men that want to be housed with women for the sexual thrill, or even for the outright opportunity to prey on women.

Around 40% of the known "trans women" in UK prison systems are sex offenders (https://trans-violence.tumblr.com/post/613407247284011008/half-of-all-transgender-prisoners-are-sex). What prison warden in their right mind that is trying to prevent sexual violence would voluntarily house convicted male sex offenders with women in the first place?

Things aren't black and white. Also, solitary confinement probably qualifies as "cruel and unusual punishment". So you can't exactly condemn everyone to that.

For one, I wouldn't condemn everyone to solitary confinement so they can't rape each other.
This entire discussion started because you think there's some magic way to prevent all sexual assaults in prison, which I pointed out can't be done without resorting to something vile.
I'm not here to argue for or against solitary confinement, and I don't appreciate you trying to divert the discussion into this. I don't know what I'd do to eliminate this practice, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable to abuse it just because it's the best thing we can think of using for some very extreme cases.

I think you're conflating sex and gender here.

But that aside...are you trolling? The entire reason that men are raped at higher rates than women is because of the sheer amount of rape that happens in prisons. And a lot of the rapists aren't even gay. Stick women in those prisons and the amount of rape would be insane.

No, there definitely should be sex-segregated prisons.
