I did in fact work in retail. I gueess I know what you mean, since there were some customers I hated to help. (any esotery/religion books for instance)
Not to mention, that once a woman asked me to find her a book with info about how to rip off her husband.

Anyway, you must look at things in the context. No matter what a person does at job, if they do find you interesting or want to talk to you, they will. On the other way, you really have to be disturbing to that person to really show disgust.
