No, they are under duress. There is not enough economic mobility to be sure that you can quit your job like a boomer and pick up a new one on the way home. They are being told they cannot be paid in the moment, not indefinitely.

It's not perfect but it has preserved their way of life for hundreds of years and they are the overall happiest demographic in the country.

It is in the nature of a collective to sacrifice flexibility in exchange for stability. That's not inherently bad unless the employee in question is such a one-man army that he cannot be disposed of easily on his own merit.
