They probably are. I think there are hints of this even in the Codex. But honestly just the fact that mating with an Asari will always give birth to an Asari child is scary enough. That's basically a white supremacist's worst nightmare.
That one bar scene where everyone argues that they look closest to their own species makes me think that they are always messing with everyone's heads.
