@LukeAlmighty @mangeurdenuage @coolboymew @harblinger I know this is a meme, but the idea that there are variances in ability therefore people with low ability should just suffer is incredibly stupid.
@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage there's a lot of shoulds that would make an ideal world, nice to think about sometimes
@harblinger @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage How on Earth is that a should that would make an ideal world? Are we communicating effectively?

@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage

I guess I’ll go verbose

people with low ability should just suffer is incredibly stupid.

I was pointing out that particular use of should in your sentence. It’s not that they should, it’s just that they do. Idealists like to imagine a different use of should like: “People of high ability should forgo their own pleasure to lift those of low ability out of suffering”

Idealist thoughts like that are nice thoughts, but second order effects can bring about much more total suffering (think about the theory of evolution, if low ability offspring were lifted up and high ability offspring were suppressed, then as a total the species would suffer and become lower ability over time)

Does that communicate more effectively?

@harblinger @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage
> “People of high ability should forgo their own pleasure to lift those of low ability out of suffering”
That's not really what I intended to say.
The meme implied that people with low intelligence shouldn't use computers because computers, OSs and UIs made for them are dumbed down. I'm saying that's a fallacy because high-intelligence people can always use OSs etc that supposedly better cater to their intelligence.
Follow

@Hyolobrika @mangeurdenuage @coolboymew @harblinger
I disagree immensely.
The primary way of ensuring stability of OS from user error is limiting a total options available to a user.

And if the option is not present, noone can use it, therefore smart people suffer for the dumb.

@LukeAlmighty @mangeurdenuage @coolboymew @harblinger That doesn't make any sense. There are lots of OSs. Some can be for smart people, others for dumb people.
What have you got against competition?
@LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @mangeurdenuage @coolboymew I dont like competition because it implies winners and losers, and losing isn't fun

t. loser (me)

@Hyolobrika @mangeurdenuage @harblinger @coolboymew
Not sure how saying "the collective is retarded" is collectivist, but ok, I guess I'm not a full capitalist.

@LukeAlmighty @mangeurdenuage @harblinger @coolboymew You're promoting a policy that affects everyone because otherwise a specific group of people (which you just so happen to include yourself in, most probably) will be mildly negatively affected otherwise, are you not?
That's collectivism.

@Hyolobrika @mangeurdenuage @harblinger @coolboymew
No, I said, that people should try to avoid using technologies, that can ruin their lives, while not being able to identify or minimalize the dangers connected to it's use.

That was your original point wasn't it? That stupid people shouln't suffer restrictions on computers?

@Hyolobrika @mangeurdenuage @harblinger @coolboymew
I used an example, where I believed, that you would understand the concept of self harm by dumb people using a tool too advanced for them.

But I don't believe in most of government limitations. Guns included. Let the dumb people off themselves. A loving father will teach his 6YO all the gun safety rules, and a gun is the coolest toy any kid can wish for.

Same rules aply to college debt, or single mothers. These people should have known better at that point.

@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @harblinger @mangeurdenuage The problem is that currently smartphones are 100% making people stupid. New kids in college/out of college does not even understand folder structure due to the Mobile "drop everything in" bucket many of them has

https://www.theverge.com/22684730/students-file-folder-directory-structure-education-gen-z

This issue is being made worse when you consider that iPads are a massive walled garden and Windows and MacOS are very close to actually start attempting this, fucking us all over in the process
@mangeurdenuage @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @harblinger
>Here's an idea. When [your kids] hit 11, give them a plaintext file with 10,000 WPA2 keys and tell them the real one is in there somewhere. See how quickly they discover Python or Bash then.
I laughed out loud.

Please next time post articles in text form so I can copy and paste it. If you don't want to link to the original website, you can always use an archive link or something like scribe.rip. Failing that, Pleroma will probably let you attach an MHTML file. It definitely will a text file.

@Hyolobrika @mangeurdenuage @harblinger @coolboymew
Excuse my autism, but I am seriously not sure, if trolling or actually a good parenting advice.

@mangeurdenuage @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @harblinger This person makes a good point.

Conversely, I don’t think one needs deep domain knowledge to be good – a hypothetical good legislator would need only enough wisdom to find good advisors.

@coolboymew @LukeAlmighty @harblinger @mangeurdenuage Is it more or less likely than them knowing the thing themselves though? I'd wager more.
@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @harblinger @mangeurdenuage them knowing nothing means they'll be more likely to trust a paid shill paid to lied about it because they don't have the minimum competency required to understand the information

@coolboymew @Hyolobrika @harblinger @mangeurdenuage
This...
And not even just a payed shill. There are way too many "sources" that do pass every institutional test of being relyable, and still is full of esoteric garbage.

@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @harblinger
Who says who is qualified for what ? HR peopel ? People with enough knowledge on the subject ?
@mangeurdenuage @Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @harblinger I remember hanging out on the sysadmin subreddit, decent source of news and when I'm bored at work

Most of the IT people over there agreed that someone that a shitload of certs doesn't necessarily make a good tech either
@coolboymew @mangeurdenuage @Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @harblinger thats accupational licensing at play. Getting a paper decree doesnt ever equate to experience, nor vice versa
@Soy_Magnus @Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @harblinger @mangeurdenuage They're pretty much only good to start out (and in IT, there's many alternative paths) otherwise they're complete scams
@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @harblinger
>person makes a good point.
Which is ? He posted a lot of words for little argument imo.
@LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @harblinger @mangeurdenuage

and a well developed ability to identify good advisors

and an ego that's sufficiently in check to actually do so and then heed their advice
@coolboymew @Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @harblinger @mangeurdenuage The world thought that technology would make things easier, and now we have a generation raised on tech that doesn't know how it works at all.

@coolboymew @Hyolobrika @harblinger @mangeurdenuage
The good news:
A lot more work for talented IT people.
The bad news:
A lot more "hey, you understand computers right? I have this problem..."

@LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @Hyolobrika @harblinger @mangeurdenuage I smell the same scent as the iphone headphone jack:

“geez, who cares? If you still want old wired headphones then find another phone”

10 years later

“well no one uses wired phones anyway, just use bluetooth!!!!”

@WashedOutGundamPilot @Hyolobrika @coolboymew @harblinger @mangeurdenuage
I love that this had become a meme, where it's seen as a symbol of freedom on devices to have a headphone jack :D

@LukeAlmighty @WashedOutGundamPilot @Hyolobrika @harblinger @mangeurdenuage it's hilarious that I've seen stupid Apple Laptops finally gets larger to the level of actually having a HDMI port again. Same for Phones

Shit got so thin it became completely useless because you couldn't have any useful ports whatsoever. The devices being this thin benefitted no one

@coolboymew @LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @harblinger @mangeurdenuage What!?!?! But the girls buying macs from the university apple store LOVE how thin they are!!!!! Don’t tell me you don’t like forcing everything into a single Type C port! I absolutely love the simplicity of chaining 4 separate 5-slot USB hubs into one another in order to do my work!

MMMM mmmmm good! So simple and streamlined!!!

@mangeurdenuage @LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @coolboymew @harblinger Also if anyone has a picture of a ton of USB type C hubs daisy chained that would be great, it’s a point I’ve had to make before and I still don’t have an example to explain it to boomers

@harblinger @LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage That’s a good one. I really should have taken a pic, a while back in the airport I saw a guy with his macbook at at least 3 of them, using multiple hard drives, a tablet for drawing, and some kind of digital toaster (external GPU?) and it just drove home how unsuited apple seems intent to make their products for working folk

@WashedOutGundamPilot @LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @harblinger @mangeurdenuage meanwhile, on a real laptop, you'll have multiple internal SSD/mini HDD slots, an actual real graphic card, actual ports to connect your stuff in directly too
@WashedOutGundamPilot @harblinger @LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @coolboymew @mangeurdenuage That would've been cool to see.
That kind of cludge reminds me that Apple is merely keeping up appearances while being the Gucci version of Amiga. [Plz don't @me about Amiga, I fucking loved those damned things when the going was good]
@WashedOutGundamPilot @mangeurdenuage @LukeAlmighty @Hyolobrika @coolboymew @harblinger If I looked I could probably find one of the firewire daisy chains one of my dipshit friends did over a decade ago on his old MacBook. It looked just as retarded back then.
@Hyolobrika @LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @harblinger
>What have you got against competition?
I'm slightly deviating from the subject.
You can't have competition when the OS are proprietary or permissive compiled intro proprietary.
Real competition looks like this
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Desktop_environment
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Window_manager
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/File_managers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions
A big ass amount of software that forked forked and re forked itself in a giant like gene pool evolution.
