And yes, rebels got a really rough start. The first battle unironically looks like naked gun joke scene. The charecters did need a ton of time to get developed properly.

A bit. But Rebels benefits a lot from Ahsoka being in the story, and she's not a Disney creation. I've found that Rebels does grow on you, but my first instinct was to hate the visuals. They somehow managed to ruin the lightsaber look. Made them look too thin and fragile, instead of the incredible plasma death bats in previous incarnations.
