Choose the lesser evil
I don't play games with either of these, but I'd prefer battle passes over loot boxes if I was playing a game that had it. At least with battle passes it encourages you to actually play the game to get the rewards vs literally gambling

Don't they usually have non paid versions of battle passes as well? Sorta the same thing right? I'm fine with loot boxes earned through gameplay though as you're not paying actual money for them

Yes, and that makes me so sad about it.
Payed battle pass has exclusive items, that a free player will never get, and payed one only if he turns to a prisoner of his own keyboard.
But a F2P player gets (usually) loot boxes proportional to how much he plays anyway, and sometimes, get rewarded with the cool stuff too.
