I believe, that there are at least 2 partial "solutons", that can be done, that will ease the suffering, while not needing a collapse.

1) You can ensure each community is d
food, water and electricity self sufficient. This should have been done a long time ago, even if only for purpose of war economy, but the changes needed are not even drastic.

2) Mandate creation of community centers big enough, to allow free meetings of all age groups. While the base form does exist for kids in school, after that, there is 0 need for people in a community to ever meet for a drink of tea. And while I am not sure what form such a center should have, consumerism based pubs and shopping centers do fail at this role miserably.

I just believe, that the problems are not as much connected to existence of technologies as to the mindset around them. The existence of motors didn't mean, that cars had to deform cities. Electro bikes and trains do exist as well now, and the "need" for car seems to be a purely cultural one. Same goes for antidepressants or birth control pills.

Yes, it does take time for each technology to show it's dark side, but that doesn't mean it's usage cannot be controlled.
