Is Harry Potter an isekai

· · Web · 5 · 4 · 1
the wizards world is interconnected with the real one and it's not in another dimension, so no. Narnia's Chronicles could be considered an isekai

@RikaDerufu
Interconnected, yes.
But it definitelly is in another dimension.

no it's not. Hogwarts is in our world, is just that non wizards can't see it. Narnia on the other hand is literally in another dimension

@matana @RikaDerufu
There is no way you can walk to a 9 3/4 platform. There is no place you can walk to reach the Diagon Alley. The only way to reach the wizzarding word is through magic. It is a different dimension, even if closely connected thourgh many means..

you can if you have magic powers, you are still in this world, it's just that you have access to special places if you are a wizard

@RikaDerufu @matana
And these "special places" are literally not part of what we muggles call "this world".

It's not. The geography of Harry Potter is largely uninspiring. They're not in separate dimensions, merely hidden from view to the uninitiated. The series still broadly fits the isekai genre thoughever.

@rher @matana @RikaDerufu
They literally are though. The platform 9 3/4 is placed exactly where platform 9 is. There are trains passing through trains. It is a separate space.

It's not. It's a complete platform that is impercievable from the outside.. The whole thing still has to be connected to the english rail network and wizards are cheap bastards.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @rher
It doesn't help that the movies showed things differently. IIRC The Black house in the books had that secret keeper charm on it so it was invisible to everyone that didn't know the secret. Instead of the buildings moving as shown in the movies.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @RikaDerufu
@LukeAlmighty @matana @rher
Also hogwarts had charms on it as well that made it so muggles couldn't see it or go near it. Basically a lot of it just came down to "Its magic bitch I ain't go to explain shit"
@LukeAlmighty @RikaDerufu @matana
@LukeAlmighty @matana @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @RikaDerufu @matana @rher It's like the SEP field in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
It's still there, it's just Someone Else's Problem

@TURBORETARD9000 @Awoo @matana @rher @RikaDerufu
Let's say, that for a moment, I do accept, that the muggles are just ignoring and walking around a deformed space.

The hidden space still has a culture, fauna, animals and laws of physics different more then enough for it, to be called "another world". Especially, since it is inacessable to the normies.

@Awoo @rher @LukeAlmighty @matana @RikaDerufu in the book when harry is given the secret of #12 grimmauld place the houses around it are described as moving so it can appear

but

that doesn't mean that's actually what happened. it makes more sense that it's just an illusion being removed in a visually creative way

however it's clear that magic can do some kind of pocket dimension business because of all the times the inner volume of an object is enormously larger than the exterior
In my defense I have the books burned into my brain because I read them at age nine. Same way I still remember all the Toa names and the same way you remember the first 150 pokemon.
Those kids are going to have valuable brainpower permanently allocated to harry potter trivia. It's over.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @LukeAlmighty
One of my nieces is obsessed with it. Last time I saw her she asked me what House I would be in. When I told her Slytherin she looked upset and asked. "You'll be one of the good Slytherin though won't you Uncle Awoo?"

I couldn't look in her the face when I replied with "Of course" :awoo_sad3:
@rher @matana @AidanTTIerian @deprecated_ii @RikaDerufu
@LukeAlmighty @matana @eee
I didn't want to go there. I am already in trouble for saying Nigger in front of the kids. Last thing they want is Uncle Awoo to start dropping crime statistics.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @rher @AidanTTIerian @deprecated_ii @RikaDerufu
@eee @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @rher @deprecated_ii @RikaDerufu When you really think about it, shouldn't Voldy and the Death Eaters have been in Gryffindor? What's more brave than standing up against a totalitarian system, for your people being ethnically replaced? Merely being a pure-blood supremacist, even if you didn't commit any actual violence, is punishable by life in Azkaban.

And the libtards who love racemixing should be in Slytherin - the house supposedly all about personal social status, profit, and power. They're not the resistance, they're in power.
@rher @AidanTTIerian @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @deprecated_ii @RikaDerufu there were people in their 20s read them when they came out and taking them super seriously. it was kinda eh. especially since they weren't very good after the first three.
@CenturianFrend @rher @AidanTTIerian @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @deprecated_ii @RikaDerufu i didn't. i remember picking them up when people wouldn't shut up about them. the first three were simple, straightforward, charming kid's stories. starting with goblet of fire, the books felt very overwrought and much longer and more boring than they needed to be.

i don't really remember finishing the series, since it was just not very interesting to me. i've absorbed too much about it through cultural osmosis and seeing the movies with younger family members (and, embarrassingly, reading some of yudkowsky's fanfiction), but i couldn't really tell you the plot of the series in any meaningful detail.
@grey @rher @AidanTTIerian @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @deprecated_ii @RikaDerufu I didn't read the first 3
I just read goblet of fire and liked it.

I can speed read though.

Plot: Wizard Hitler wants to purge mixed bloods so magic doesn't disappear. He fails, magic will eventually disappear.
The end.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @rher
Depends which one we are talking about the first Wizard Hitler was gay and gave aids to another wizard but in typical JK fashion they called it a "Blood pact"
@LukeAlmighty @matana @AidanTTIerian @CenturianFrend @deprecated_ii @grey @RikaDerufu
@grey @CenturianFrend @rher @AidanTTIerian @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @RikaDerufu eh voldemort's ideas would make things worse, not better

it's not like he wanted to institute a fertility and eugenics program to increase the wizard population. he was just a nutcase who was obsessed with his own specialness as a descendant of slytherin
@CenturianFrend @grey @rher @AidanTTIerian @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @RikaDerufu voldemort's childhood is explored in book 6

he's basically just a manipulative psychopath with a great deal of inherent power
Show newer
omg just play it with her and stop being a little bitch.
quality family time is to be cherished.
Take turns. Each time the main character dies you take over. Pass the controller. This is literally how I would mend shit with my bro after our fights.
When this happens I pull out a book on coal mining and let her keep talking.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @deprecated_ii @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @matana @rher @RikaDerufu True, but how much dimension shenanigans does it take to count as an isekai?
Is D&D an isekai because you can stuff someone in a bag of holding? (Well, if you spin it right I guess)
@LukeAlmighty @matana @TURBORETARD9000
D&D is a strange one. Because some versions had an alternative Material Realm outside the otherside of either The Plane of Shadows or the Ethereal Realm. So that might meet the criteria.
@deprecated_ii @LukeAlmighty @RikaDerufu @matana @rher
@LukeAlmighty @matana @Awoo @LukeAlmighty @RikaDerufu @deprecated_ii @matana @rher I wonder if the ability to walk freely between the worlds count. So far all the isekai I've heard about (I am woefully uncultured in this aspect) involved basically being thrown into the other worlds and having to adapt to their new lives and surroundings
@LukeAlmighty @rher @matana @RikaDerufu In the movie, "platforms" 9 & 10 are really just the same platform, with tracks 9 & 10 on either side, and the entrance to 9.75 is inside a pillar on that platform. But in the books, the entrance is in "the wall between" 9 & 10, which I always thought of as a wall between two entrances, not a wall parallel to the tracks. So, 9.75 isn't actually overlapping anything, and it's just hidden.

Or, it doesn't matter at all, and you could think of it as the wall teleporting you to a location separate from King's Cross, so the Hogwarts Express never even enters King's Cross station proper.
@LukeAlmighty @matana @RikaDerufu Yeah, clearly you can't run through a brick wall into another dimension. It's pretty obvious that Harry Potter split his skull open and died when he tried that, which is when the isekai part begins.
