It feels so snobish to tell friends that not only do I not care about graphics, but I actually believe, that graphical minimalism is a good thing.
But I know I'm correct ![]()
@beardalaxy
Exactly my thoughts...
Well, I was thinking of Tears, but yes. These games won't age at all.
Also, noise... At this point, all additional details are just noise. I realized this while playing Monster Hunter world and Rise.... and I liked the Rise artstyle more, since World was tiring my eyes.
@berkberkman @LukeAlmighty bomb rush cyberfunk is another one that just came out with the same style. Anything with cel shading is still gonna look good pretty much forever. Simple shading, solid/flat colors. That can scale very easily.
@LukeAlmighty a really big thing I keep seeing that I hate with a passion is dithered transparency. I get that it saves on resources but it looks sooooo bad.
@beardalaxy
Yes, I had several posts on dithering.
It's a fucking crime.
@LukeAlmighty it's weird that it had a resurgence lately. Like guys... We left this in the 16bit era for a reason...
@beardalaxy
The reason is, because they expect people to be playing games on 8k TVs from 4m away...
I think.... That is the only reason I can think of. But to be fair, some trends come out of nowhere, and it doesn't just make sense. The "piss filter" era is a thing that didn't need to exist :D Motion blur is a thing too :peepoShrug:
The problem with dithering though is, that it's always in the core of the engine, so it cannot be removed in the settings.
@LukeAlmighty piss filter I THINK came from the matrix. The color grading was very intentionally done, but then everyone wanted to be exactly like the matrix. This affected the final cut of blade runner for instance.
The trend just hit gaming a little bit later, like a lot of Hollywood stuff has.
@LukeAlmighty mfw this game has better graphics than most modern sludge since like 2010
