The #BestVidyaGirlContest has ended, and Metroid's Samus Aran is our winner! Samus looked amazing throughout this entire tournament, and ended up defeating another formidable contestant, Fate's Tamamo, 57% - 43% after 387 votes. Interestingly, this result ends up making Touhou's Remilia Scarlet look like the 2nd strongest girl of the tournament, given how she actually managed to bring Samus all the way down to 54%. That result is probably a bit misleading (Samus definitely powered up for the final match, getting 222 votes and breaking Tamamo's old record of 200 votes against 2B), but Remilia still deserves the shoutout, especially considering just how badly she got screwed over by the bracket.

We'll see in the following days how Samus will be celebrated. Also, I'll be doing a recap of the whole tournament over the coming days/weeks, including writeups of every single match. It will be a fun trip down memory lane, and man, do a lot of these matches look very different with the benefit of hindsight. And after THAT, we'll talk about potentially retiring Samus from future tournaments, given just how unbeatable she looks.
I thought there could be a new incarnation of the contest where the gimmick* is East vs West; but then I wondered what could yellow zipper heads like Samus Aran or princess Zelda do against Western heroines like Aloy or Abby.

So, @ChristiJunior , how many nominees, whether they made it into the contest or not, were from Western games?

*gotta start thinking in terms of gimmicks like my hero Shiggy. No gimmick? No content.
@ChristiJunior In case you ever wondered why there's so much art depicting Samus hanging out with Pikachu, the answer is Smash Bros: in Brawl's massive adventure mode (The Subspace Emissary) there's a whole little arc where Zero Suit Samus rescues Pikachu from the villains, then he helps her get the Power Suit back, before the two of them fight Ridley together.

Fucking cowards.

Just remembered I gotta laugh at my parents who told me I would never find a girlfriend if I didn't get out and socialize more (I have no idea where people my age go out to socialize)
@DEERBLOOD @ElTigre @ChristiJunior I was hoping for a competitive match, but after 300+ votes it isn't likely to change much.

All this proves now is that Samus wins popularity contests by default. She has universal appeal. I thought the fediverse could throw a real challenge at her because she always wins normie polls against normie opponents, and the denizens of the fediverse are connoisseurs of vidya women.

But if there is no one who can beat her what's the point? It just sucks the fun out of it for me, because if it isn't competitive it feels pointless, the result was determined as soon as Samus was entered. And I voted for Samus in one or two of the leadup polls.
@ChristiJunior Samus is iconic and cool but Tamamo is one of gamings best wives. There is simply no personality there. If you marry Samus you marry at best a concept expanded by fanfic.

If you marry Tamamo you know what you are getting because she is explicitly a wife and one of the best and most devoted, with the exception of some really complicated things that happened several hundred years ago which she would not want us to get into right now.

It would be unfair to call Samus a character design or a glorified gacha char like one could 2B (or arguably Ryza but for Ryza it would be mean as nobody played her game but she clearly had a personality in those.) Samus is a gaming icon for a reason and has earned a bit better than that designation but the difference between her and Foxwife is still the same in spirit between Foxwife and 2B. But at least Samus is competent and actually succeeds in her games
