I'm curious... could you run a virtual machine inside a virtual machine?
I'll have to try this with VirtualBox. I know there are better software out there, but I'm not gonna spend money on Vmware just for a silly idea I came up with after taking a shower.
@alyx VMware is free for noncommercial users. But it's also not Libre so why even use it
@igeljaeger
Really? I haven't looked into it in forever, and I just always remembered it as being $$$. Maybe I'll looked into it at some point.
@alyx I did try it out on Linux but the installation process is retarded don't waste your time
@igeljaeger @alyx last time I tried to install vmware the installer just didn't work, stick to foss qemu+kvm (gnome boxes) or virtualbox
@phoenix
I've been wanting to give qemu a try, but VirtualBox has been so perfect for me, that I never really lacked any features, so why fix something that's not broken.
@igeljaeger
@a7
How about I piss everyone off and install Windows 10.
@igeljaeger @phoenix

@alyx @a7 @igeljaeger @phoenix Install windows 8.0 like a proper degenerate. Commit to making an ass of yourself!

@VD15
I would, but I no longer have a 8 license. I upgraded that one to 10. I still have several Vista licenses I think.

@alyx @a7 @igeljaeger @phoenix Wait, you don't pirate your windows?

@VD15
Haven't needed to do it for myself since 2009. I do use cracks on occasions in VMs though because it's simpler.
@phoenix @igeljaeger @a7
@VD15 @phoenix @a7 @alyx is this a windows user coming out thread? Fucking sinners
@alyx @VD15 @a7 @phoenix uuuh that's fine too I guess. Can't you find Libre alternatives to that software?
@igeljaeger
Technically yes, but the windows software is sometimes just plain better.
@VD15 @a7 @phoenix
@VD15
I don't judge one's OS.... unless it's OSX. Those fuckers can burn in hell.
@phoenix @igeljaeger @a7
@alyx @VD15 @a7 @phoenix macos is far more compatible with Linux than windows is. So I'd prefer it succeeding over windows even if it never will
@igeljaeger
Windows literally has a Linux subsystem these days. So not really true anymore.
@VD15 @a7 @phoenix
@alyx @VD15 @a7 @phoenix BRO that subsystem exists to get Linux users off of Linux (mainly coders). It achieves nothing else in terms of windows software being compatible with linux

@igeljaeger @a7 @phoenix @alyx Tell you what, when there's an IDE on linux that can hold a candle to visual studio, I'll move.

@a7
Isn't emacs supposed to have an insane learning curve? Or at least that was my understanding from what i've heard.
@VD15 @igeljaeger @phoenix
@alyx @a7 @VD15 @phoenix do you look at textfiles all day? No? Then forget about emacs
@igeljaeger
But text files are neat! And what if I do want to look at text files all day?

@alyx @a7 @igeljaeger @phoenix I have also yet to see emacs's debugger or editor come close to what VS has to offer.

@igeljaeger
I think you could technically run some cli programs. But I left Windows before it happened. So I wouldn't know.
@VD15 @a7 @phoenix
@igeljaeger
In the past I've needed to use MS Office for example, but currently it's just foobar2000 that I haven't managed to replace.
@VD15 @a7 @phoenix
@a7 @VD15 @alyx @phoenix im glad I got sick of fiddling around with superficial aspects of software
@a7
Have no idea why it's the "meme music player". I just enjoy using it cause it's the best I've found so far. Or at least the best for my needs.
@igeljaeger @VD15 @phoenix
@a7 @alyx @VD15 @igeljaeger yeah, foobar is just... another music player to me, I don't think there are any special features, really
@phoenix @VD15 @alyx @igeljaeger ya I've just noticed its chantard approved havent heard any good reasons.
@alyx @igeljaeger @VD15 @a7 consider using deadbeef, it's pretty similar to fb2k. there's also mpd+cantata and clementine which I like to use.
for ms office, there's libreoffice, which works pretty well
@phoenix
I've tried all of those. Clementine and deadbeef have been the most useful, and they are quite close indeed. But not quite there. I generally revisit them every once in a while to see how they've progressed.
@VD15 @a7 @igeljaeger
@alyx @phoenix @VD15 @igeljaeger I always hear chan fags gushing about foobar2000 what makes it good?
@a7
Lots of plugins. Very customizable. Theme support. Plays any audio format you throw at it (even some old game music, with the right plugin). It does it all, and it does it well as far as I'm concerned.
@VD15 @igeljaeger @phoenix
@alyx @a7 @VD15 @phoenix I just need mp3s to work and sometimes m4a if it was pirated from itunes
@alyx @a7 @VD15 @igeljaeger I mean, that's pretty much every linux audio player, I haven't found one where you couldn't play any audio format (excluding old game music, because that's too niche. audacious has a plugin for it though)
@phoenix @alyx @VD15 @igeljaeger you can install any codec for any player that's why I hate anime fags that gush about mpv for codecs, it's generally the same fucking codecs.. smh onnifam
@phoenix
I've found a lot of players that have bits and pieces of what I want. But what's usually the deal breaker is an inferior equalizer and bad replay gain support. And foobar's theme support is always that little extra that seals the deal for me.
@VD15 @a7 @igeljaeger

@igeljaeger @a7 @phoenix @alyx If your software doesn't support at least two themes it's unusable. Change my mind.

@igeljaeger
Technically my theme doesn't have much bling, but foobar allowed me to arrange everything precisely how I wanted it. And I can always switch things around easily.
