I get what you were trying to say, that people don't go through all that trouble for a pet, like they do for a baby, and I think you are wrong.
Firstly, sure humans can't carry animals in their womb. But you really think there aren't some nutjobs out there that wouldn't do it if they could? And there are absolutely people that go through extreme extents and invest a lot of effort for a pet animal.
Secondly, there are also plenty of people that treat their children as if they were a pet. As if a kid is theirs to completely control and manipulate forever.
Sure, the initial meme is a bit exaggerated, but there is truth behind it.
