I've encountered this thing before. I think it was from some book that was later completely debunked, but not b/c of that passage in particular.
Funny enough there is a way to have bullets move through a curved pipe in a way to where you'd shoot yourself in the head, but it's not like how it's described there. Bending barrels doesn't work like in Tom&Jerry.
