It's dumbfounding how even people who seem to have some medical knowledge are HORRIBLE at actually tracking news about Covid19.

And then they'll start spouting their "educated" opinion that the virus couldn't do this or that, while being completely uninformed on everything that has been studied and observed about the virus.

Stop fucking treating this like it's the flu virus. It's not. It's an entirely new virus, that infects through a completely different spike protein, and as such, can cause completely different problems.

@alyx So you're telling me the news media isn't harping on this point day and night why? Should they not be repeating without end "while this doesn't kill so many people, it could debilitate you for the rest of your life" and doing there best to hunt down examples for interview? Is that not scarier to people than the very evidently low death rate? It's simply not in the mainstream narrative and that does not add up.

@Tim
Because the mainstream news media treats all of you like a bunch of morons, that can't handle nuance. Meanwhile, even low-grade science outlets like Livescience or ScienceAlert have covered all of these things from the start.

@alyx That sounds like a poorly fit excuse to me. I broke down exactly how they could sell it to even the most dull of people. Hard to see it not working given everything else we've seen them sell.

@Tim
You fail at 2 things.
1) to see just how bad mainstream journalists insist at being at their job.
2) to understand human psychology. A debilitating condition is rarely as scary as death, because it just doesn't carry the same immediacy of the threat.
With "debilitating condition" there's still hope that things will improve in time. With death, there's no hope you'll be resurrected.

And if you really insist on not trusting the science because CNN and Buzzfeed aren't talking about it, then you need to reconsider your life.

@alyx You seem to be having a moment and you lack real judgment. No wonder no one sane believes you.

Journalists do suck at their jobs. But with something like this, it's more than just journalists who decide what they talk about. It's been drilled in to people for decades now that the modern way to get ahead is to be smart, and you don't think "virus make you dumb forever" is a good way to make people worry? It still doesn't add up. I'm not saying you're wrong, you could still be right, but there's a question mark there, and Halon's razor doesn't work when self interests this great are at play.
