Newer versions of Android broke doing stuff in backgroud for the sake of battery life. And they still don't have amazing battery life because OEMs make the worst decisions in what they put in the phones.

If you ask me, I'd bet that about 50% of a modern high end smartphone's battery is literally wasted because of much too powerful components for what the phone is actually being used for.
