what happened?

There's nothing to be ashamed about. You're not some pokemon streamer that does this all the time. I'm guessing you misunderstood the rules or misremembered.

I was familiar with the whole nuzlocke thing, and watched a few streamers do a 1v1 or 3way challenge, but I haven't heard of the no potions rule. It might not even be one of those things that everyone follows anyway.
@theblessing @colonelj
As I suspected, normal nuzlocke allows potions. The no-potions is an optional modifier you can take if you want an extra challenge. (but it's probably not something you should do unless you're already experienced enough with the nuzlocke format).
If you want something extra, I'd go towards randomizers first, before doing something like no-potions.

Another source doesn't mention potions at all, but does mention other modifiers you can choose for your nuzlocke.

Hardcore nuzlocke is not the same thing as nuzlocke. This is disingenuous bullshit. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to deceive people. You're the type of elitist gamer jackass that I hate, and the reason why I refuse to play multiplayer. Go shove a rusty pipe up yours.

> I've still never heard of a nuzzloke with items in battle as the default rule, I've always seen that as a modification
I don't believe you. Not one bit.
@kier @Utility @colonelj @theblessing
There we go with more elitism bs. "solo runs? Oy, you need set mode and items off, because I randomly decided that's how everyone everywhere does it, without citing anything and pulling it out of my... ".
Let it also be known, our rules are absolutely bullshit. Every gym we kick pokemon off each other's team and then fake throw a hissy fit or hold memorials. This is all a joke to begin with.
