To this day I still don't have a Discord account. When I first heard about it, I had a vague sense that it was bad software, badly made by a bad company. I could smell it a mile away.

So, what do you guys think? Was my instinct right, or was I just paranoid?

It's just standard big tech shenanigans. Imagine IRC on steroids with the centralized big-tech touch. Lots of cool features, smooth interface, but it's centralized and proprietary. Your own server isn't really your own server.

@alyx Discord is garbage. They don't respect freedom or free speech. They punish entire groups. China style. Doesn't matter if you didn't do anything wrong, if one of your friends does you're just as guilty.

@alyx I had Discord around 2016, but abandoned it after a while. It was bizarre to watch communities of gamers and ecelebs going from shitposting and 4chan memes back in the day to tranny mods and virtual commie dictatorships, as most servers have been for years now. The software itself was not that bad though, the interface and features were good, but the company behind it was always shady and probably collected lots of data from the users even back then.
@deadheat @alyx what you describe isn’t even the worst case. Some tech startups use discord as a corporate communications tool, for whatever mentally questionable reason.

@alyx I almost never use discord because I don't really understood what it does

@alyx

I wanted to like Discord, but every single chat room carries a message that you must be pro-fruitcake or they'll ban you. I simply won't create an account on a platform like that.

It's for human cockroaches.
@alyx

I have never, and will never, have a Discord account. Same goes for Telegram, Twitter, Instagram and many others.

Mainly gaming/nerd instance for people who value free speech. Everyone is welcome.
