Ever played Portal 2? Remember the part where Glados tries to fry Wheatley's electric brain with a paradox, but Wheatley is literally too stupid to actually get caught in the paradox loop? That's how I imagine cognitive dissonance works too. You need to have a minimum of intelligence for any pain to occur at all.
